Magic Fall Short in Game 7 Despite Paolo Banchero’s Stellar Performance

Paolo Banchero’s inaugural NBA playoff journey concluded in disappointment as the Orlando Magic surrendered a commanding first-half lead to the Cleveland Cavaliers, eventually falling 106-94 in Game 7 on Sunday. Despite Banchero’s impressive 38-point performance, the Magic failed to contain Donovan Mitchell’s 39-point onslaught, sealing their exit from the postseason.

The Magic, initially holding an 18-point advantage, succumbed to the Cavaliers’ relentless second-half resurgence, exacerbated by the deafening roar of the Cleveland crowd, making communication on the court challenging for Orlando. Despite entering the fourth quarter trailing by just seven points, the Magic couldn’t withstand Mitchell’s offensive onslaught, leading to their defeat.

The loss marked a bitter end to Orlando’s breakout season, characterized by their unexpected rise from a 34-win team the previous year to securing the fifth seed in the playoffs. Banchero showcased his burgeoning talent throughout the series with 27.0 points and 8.6 rebounds in his first playoff series, and in Game 7 tied a team record with 15 free throws. But his teammates Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs struggled, shooting a combined 3 for 28 from the field. Suggs, hampered by a significant ankle injury sustained in the series opener, particularly struggled, managing just 2 of 10 from beyond the arc.
