Switzerland’s Euro 2024 Prospects Diminished by Injuries to Schär and Zakaria

Switzerland’s preparations for the upcoming European Championship have been dealt a blow as two key players face uncertain fitness ahead of the tournament.

Newcastle’s Fabian Schär and Monaco’s Denis Zakaria are both sidelined with hamstring injuries, according to their respective club coaches.

Speaking on Friday, Newcastle coach Eddie Howe stated, “Fabian will miss a period of time. He won’t be available tomorrow and I doubt we’ll see him again this season.”

Similarly, Monaco coach Adi Hütter remarked on Thursday that Zakaria is unlikely to feature again this month due to his injury.

The status of both players for Euro 2024 remains unclear, with Switzerland coach Murat Yakin set to announce his preferred squad on May 17. UEFA requires final squads to be submitted by June 7, a week before the tournament’s opening game.

Euro 2024 commences on June 14 with a match between host nation Germany and Scotland in Munich. Switzerland’s campaign begins the following day against Hungary in Cologne, followed by matches against Scotland on June 19 and Germany on June 23, both in Frankfurt.
