Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani Calls Time on International Career

Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani has formally announced his retirement from international football at the age of 37.

Recognized as “El Matador,” Cavani stands as Uruguay’s second-highest scorer of all time, having notched 58 goals across 136 appearances for the national team.

In a statement shared via social media, Cavani expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country, stating, “I have been and always will be blessed to have pulled on this shirt to represent what I love most in the world, my country.”

The veteran striker continued, dedicating his retirement to the “beloved Celeste,” the affectionate moniker for the Uruguayan national team, and emphasizing his commitment to the next phase of his career. He affirmed, “Today I’ve decided to retire, but I’ll always follow you with my heart pounding, just like when I played in that beautiful shirt.”

Cavani’s international journey began in 2008, and he participated in four FIFA World Cup tournaments. Notably, in the 2010 edition, Uruguay reached the semi-finals, with Cavani earning recognition as the tournament’s best player.

However, his pinnacle moment in the sky blue jersey came in 2011 when Uruguay clinched the Copa America title in neighboring Argentina.

Having showcased his talent across Europe with clubs like Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United, Cavani presently plies his trade for Argentine outfit Boca Juniors.
