WNBA Rescinds Second Technical Foul on Angel Reese
In a recent development, the WNBA has decided to rescind the second technical foul assessed to Chicago rookie Angel Reese during Tuesday night’s match against the New York Liberty, where the Chicago Sky suffered an 88-75 loss.
The incident in question took place with 2:31 remaining in the game when referee Charles Watson initially called Reese for a personal foul during a rebound attempt. Reese’s reaction to the call led to a swift escalation, resulting in two rapid technical fouls and her subsequent ejection from the game.
Postgame commentary from Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon revealed her frustration with the lack of clarity surrounding the call, stating, “I tried to get an explanation. I did not. I don’t know to this moment what has happened.”
While Reese refrained from addressing the incident with reporters, she did express her gratitude for support received on social media, particularly from Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball, who offered to cover her fine, describing the ejection as “weak.”
Head official Maj Forsberg provided insight into the reasoning behind Reese’s technical fouls, citing “disrespectful addressing” of the official and “waving her hand in dismissal” as the infractions.
Despite the disruption, Reese managed to contribute positively to the game, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Teammate Marina Mabrey emphasized the importance of maintaining composure, especially for young players in the WNBA, stating, “It’s more about composure for us in our young years in the WNBA. You’ve got to get to know refs and how they respond to things.”
Lonzo Ball’s presence at the game and his offer to cover Reese’s fine underscored the camaraderie between athletes across different leagues.
Reese’s recent technical foul adds to previous disciplinary action, with a $1,000 fine imposed for failing to engage with the media after a previous loss in Indiana.
It’s worth noting that accumulating seven technical fouls during the regular season incurs a one-game suspension, highlighting the significance of maintaining discipline on the court.
