Canelo Alvarez Secures Victory Over Jaime Munguia, Maintains Titles
In a compelling matchup held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Canelo Alvarez successfully defended his four super middleweight titles, defeating Jaime Munguia via unanimous decision.
Alvarez, with a professional record of 61 wins, 2 losses, and 2 draws, showcased his dominance in the ring once again, extending his remarkable streak to 10 wins out of 11 fights held during Cinco de Mayo weekend. Notably, his only defeat in this period was against Dmitry Bivol in 2022.
Facing off against Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs), Alvarez delivered a commanding performance, securing his fourth defense of the WBC, WBO, IBF, and WBA super middleweight titles. This bout marked the first-ever encounter between two Mexican-born fighters for an undisputed championship.
Despite Munguia’s early efforts to make an impact, Alvarez’s strategic prowess and agility proved insurmountable. While Munguia demonstrated resilience, winning three rounds unanimously, Alvarez’s superior counterpunching and ring experience ultimately sealed the outcome.
“I’m very proud that all the Mexicans are here watching us,” Alvarez said. “… He’s a great fighter. He’s strong, he’s smart. … But he’s a little slow. I can see every punch. Sometimes he got me because I get so confident. … I did really good and I feel proud about it. … I’m the best fighter right now for sure.”
The clash between Alvarez and Munguia also stirred attention due to the underlying tensions between Alvarez and his former promoter, Oscar De La Hoya. Amidst the promotional backdrop, Alvarez’s focus remained steadfast, culminating in another notable victory in his illustrious career.
“I came out strong and was winning the early rounds,” Munguia said through an interpreter. “I let my hands go, but he’s a fighter with a lot of experience. The loss hurts because it’s my first loss and I felt strong. There’s no doubt I would have beaten anyone else tonight. … He’s a fighter who creates a lot of problems.”
Alvarez acknowledged a heightened determination to secure victory in the aftermath of the proceedings. While he did not manage to secure a knockout victory over Munguia, his resounding win reaffirmed his dominance in the ring yet again.
