Chargers’ WR Ladd McConkey Signs Record-Breaking Rookie Deal
The Los Angeles Chargers have signed rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey to a landmark four-year contract following an impressive showing during minicamp.
According to NFL Network sources, McConkey’s deal includes the highest guaranteed money ever for the 34th overall pick, exceeding the previous record set by Sam LaPorta from last season.
McConkey’s emergence caught the attention of quarterback Justin Herbert during spring workouts. Herbert praised McConkey, noting his quick grasp of the offense and his ability to play both as a wideout and in the slot alongside Quentin Johnston.
“He’s just picked up the offense so easily. It’s like he’s been a four or five-year vet,” Herbert said last week via The Chargers Wire. “He understands the game, he understands leverage. He’s a smart player, he’s very athletic. He can beat man coverage, find the soft spot in zones.”
McConkey, who played at Georgia, finished last season with 30 receptions for 478 yards and two touchdowns across nine games, despite battling injuries including recurring ankle issues, back injuries, turf toe, and knee tendinitis. Over his college career, he amassed 119 catches for 1,687 yards and 14 touchdowns in three seasons.
Christian Watson, Michael Pittman, and Donovan Smith are other notable players selected 34th overall since 2010.
McConkey is expected to play a significant role as the Chargers’ No. 2 wide receiver this upcoming season, showcasing his skills as a precise route runner and reliable target for Herbert.
