Guardians Extend Win Streak to Nine Games with Victory Over Angels
Ben Lively delivered a solid performance, pitching seven innings and allowing only two runs, as the Cleveland Guardians clinched their ninth consecutive win by defeating the Los Angeles Angels 5-4 on Sunday.
This streak marks the longest for Cleveland since their record-setting 22-game win streak in the AL in 2017. Their current record of 36-17 matches their best 53-game start in franchise history, achieved in 1920, 1954, and 1995, all of which led to World Series appearances, with a victory in 1920.
First-year Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt attributed the success to teamwork, emphasizing the contributions from all players and the team’s belief in each other. Vogt expressed hope to maintain the momentum going forward.
Matt Thaiss homered for the Angels, who suffered their fourth loss in five games. Reid Detmers struck out eight in five innings but was charged with three runs and four hits.
Jose Ramirez, Cleveland’s standout, walked twice and drove in a run, maintaining his impressive performance from the series’ first two games.
The Guardians secured their victory with a three-run sixth inning, taking a 5-2 lead. Despite the Angels closing the gap to 5-4 in the eighth, Cleveland held on for the win.
Injury updates included Carlos Carrasco’s bullpen session for the Guardians and Miguel Sano’s minor burn from a heat pack during rehab for the Angels.
In the next matchups, Xzavion Curry will start for the Guardians against the Colorado Rockies, while Griffin Canning takes the mound for the Angels against the New York Yankees.
