Heidenheim celebrates sweep victory / Regensburg loses pitcher’s duel

When the European Champions Cup kicked off, the German teams had mixed feelings! The Voith Heidenheim Heideköpfe team celebrated a fantastic start in front of their home fans. The German champions defeated the Prague Eagles 13-0 after seven innings. On the other hand, the Guggenberger Legionnaires narrowly lost 0-2 to the Czech record champions Draci Brno.

In Brno, the home team only started their offense in the third inning. Daniel Vavrusa and Drew Janssen took a 2-0 lead after hits from Janssen and Gary Owens. One inning later, the current Bundesliga runners-up led by eight runs. Billy Germaine hit a three-run homer, which was the highlight of the game. Shawn Larry concluded the game in the sixth inning with a two-run double. On the pitcher’s mound, Jared Mortensen had an outstanding performance with ten strikeouts in six innings. The Prague team only managed to get two hits against Canadian pitcher and reliever Mike Bolsenbroek. Box score

Regensburg experienced a closer encounter in Brno. Scott Harkin (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K), Aljo Sujak (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K), and Patrick Mitchell (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 4 K) faced the Czech trio Medina/Capka/Hurtado in a pitcher’s duel. In the second inning, the Legionnaires missed their first scoring opportunity after Marlon Jimenez scored two runs. Following two runs, Elias von Garßen and Antonios Torres reached base with no outs. Again, it was uncountable. Brno responded directly with a solo home run. The Czech team achieved the final score in the seventh inning. Box score

For the Bundesliga leaders, it is now time to secure their first home victory against Prague. The VOITH Heath Heads will next head to Brno. Both games will be held on June 5 at 7 PM.
