Palmer Nets Debut Goal as England Triumph Over Bosnia in Euro Warm-up

Cole Palmer notched his inaugural England goal, securing a 3-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in Monday’s Euro 2024 warm-up clash.

Making his first start for the Three Lions, Palmer calmly converted a penalty in the second half at St. James’ Park in Newcastle.

In his third England appearance, the 22-year-old Chelsea forward continued his impressive form, bolstering his candidacy for Gareth Southgate’s Euro squad.

Trent Alexander-Arnold also shone for England, deployed in midfield instead of his usual right-back role by Southgate. He found the net to seal England’s victory, capping off a lively performance.

Harry Kane, returning from injury, came off the bench in the second half and scored England’s third goal in the dying moments of the game.

Southgate commented, “The positive takeaway is our squad emerged from these matches without significant injuries. We faced a determined opponent, providing a good physical challenge.”

England’s victory comes after a string of mixed results, including a draw with North Macedonia in their last Euro qualifier and draws against Belgium and Brazil in March friendlies.

Palmer, Alexander-Arnold, and Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze enhanced their chances of securing a spot in the final Euro squad.

Southgate praised their performances, stating, “Palmer linked up well, securing his first goal. Eze played with confidence, and we all know Alexander-Arnold’s quality.”

However, Ollie Watkins, Conor Gallagher, and Jarrod Bowen missed opportunities to stake their claim.

Southgate remained optimistic, saying, “I’d prefer to see performances that leave us with decisions to make rather than lackluster ones. I’m pleased with several individual performances.”

Southgate faces the task of trimming his provisional 33-man squad by Friday’s deadline, ahead of England’s final warm-up match against Iceland at Wembley.

With just 13 days until England’s Group C opener against Serbia, the match against Bosnia marked the beginning of the Euro countdown.

Despite a slow start characterized by sluggish passing and movement, England improved in the second half.

Palmer broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, confidently converting a penalty after a foul on Ezri Konsa.

Alexander-Arnold extended England’s lead with a stunning volley from Jack Grealish’s cross in the 85th minute.

Kane wrapped up the victory with a close-range finish in the 90th minute, after James Maddison’s pass deflected into his path.

Southgate revealed Kane’s eagerness to take the penalty himself, saying, “He cheekily requested to come on and take the penalty, but that was never going to happen!”

England’s win sets a positive tone as they finalize preparations for the Euros, with Southgate assessing his options ahead of the tournament opener.
