Slovakia Shocks Belgium in Euro 2024 Upset
Belgium endured a stunning 1-0 defeat against Slovakia in Group E of the European Championship, marred by contentious VAR decisions that nullified two goals from Romelu Lukaku.
Slovakia seized the lead early in the match with Ivan Schranz finding the net in the seventh minute. Despite Belgium’s offensive prowess, particularly through Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne, they failed to convert numerous chances.
The turning point came in the 62nd minute when Slovakia’s David Hancko made a crucial goal-line clearance, albeit sustaining an injury in the process. This heroic moment denied Belgium an equalizer following Johan Bakayoko’s close-range attempt.
Lukaku, who holds the record for 14 goals in a qualifying group, saw both of his second-half goals disallowed by VAR. The first was overturned for offside, while the second was canceled due to a handball by Lois Openda in the buildup.
Belgium, under coach Domenico Tedesco, suffered their first loss in 15 matches and will face Romania next in Cologne on Saturday. Meanwhile, Slovakia’s next challenge will be against Ukraine in Dusseldorf on Friday.
The match in Frankfurt unfolded amid other surprises at Euro 2024, with Romania earlier securing a dominant 3-0 victory over Ukraine in Munich.
