Ten Hag’s Holiday Interrupted: Man Utd’s Bid to Retain Manager
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag disclosed that his summer break in Ibiza was unexpectedly interrupted by club executives who expressed their desire for him to remain in charge.
Speaking to Dutch TV channel NOS, Ten Hag revealed, “The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza. They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me.”
Despite a challenging previous season where United finished eighth, their lowest position in the Premier League era, Ten Hag’s tenure saw a turnaround, culminating in a successful FA Cup campaign.
“Manchester United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager,” he added.
Ten Hag, who guided United to third place in his debut season along with appearances in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals, secured the EFL Cup in 2023.
While supported by the United board, the Dutchman clarified that negotiations for a new contract are ongoing: “Manchester United and I still have to find an agreement for the new contract. This isn’t easily done – we are still going to have to talk about this.”
The decision to retain Ten Hag followed deliberations that involved potential candidates, reflecting Ineos’ considered approach as relatively new stakeholders in football.
